Academic Advising is an integral part of teaching and learning at Texas State. Advising is a student-centered, collaborative process that engages students in educational planning to promote academic, personal and professional development, while considering diverse interests, abilities and goals.

|Provide accurate and up-to-date information about Texas State regulations, policies, and procedures.||Attend academic advising appointments prepared. Bring all advising related materials and questions.|
|Correctly interpret degree and major requirements, including those regarding the core curriculum.||Clarify personal values and goals.|
|Maintain confidentiality and be knowledgeable of the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).||Activate and regularly check your Bobcat e-mail account for communications from the University faculty, staff, and administration.|
|Help students define and develop realistic goals.||Check for registration holds and eligibility in CatsWeb and know the academic calendar.|
|Assist students with developing educational plans consistent with their abilities and interests.||Use campus resources.|
|Be knowledgeable about Texas State resources and make appropriate referrals.||Ask questions if you do not understand
an issue or have a concern.
