Communication - Parents and Teachers as Allies in Mental Health

November 7th at 11:00 am UAC 124

Silence is one of the greatest challenges we must overcome to help students who are living with mental illness. Teachers and administrators can help – when armed with knowledge of the symptoms and empathy for parents/caregivers and the student.

What teachers and staff will learn:

  • The difference between bad behavior and symptoms of mental illness
  • Early warning signs of a student in crisis
  • How to communicate and partner with families effectively
  • Where to find additional mental health resources

Presented in partnership with the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

This workshop is intended for students seeking teacher certification.

Space is limited. Sign up here!

About Professional Development

Project Maestros met with nine senior-level administrators in the College of Education to develop working relationships with college leadership, create a plan for student professional development, and to construct an advisory council to guide curriculum development for transferable skills and cultural fluency.

The Associate Director has confirmed two faculty members from the College of Education to serve on the Advisory Council: Dr. Paul Mencke and Dr. Jane Saunders. The advisory council is leading an initiative this semester to survey faculty and students to determine which topics will be included in the professional development workshop series.

Further, the Associate Director has met with over 25 primary and secondary Principals in the region that act as primary employers of pre-service teachers to determine which skills are most desired in the workforce. The feedback from employers, faculty, and students will guide the future professional development workshops and course refinement within the college.
